Visitors to Manukau just need to be aware that it's easy to get confused about our name - and for that we apologise.
'Manukau' and 'Manukau City' are used interchangeably to mean either the whole area or just the main city.
Throughout this website, we have used Manukau to define the area as a whole and Manukau City when referring to the main city.
Hoturoa was the commander of the Tainui waka which arrived in the Manukau Harbour around 1350 AD. Hearing what sounded like people calling, Hoturoa sent his men to investigate. When they returned they said 'it's only birds' (he manu kau noa iho), hence the area became known as Manu-kau.
