For Te Wai o Hua people the mountain remains a place of spiritual significance. It is known as Te Pane o Mataoho, 'the head of Mataoho', Mataoho is the demi-god of volcanoes. Erupting about 18,000 years ago, the summit is 106 metres above sea level and offers amazing views of Manukau Harbour.

The Mangere Gateway Avenue Route

The Māngere Gateway Avenue Route is both a circular tour and an alternative route between Auckland Airport in Manukau and Auckland City.  The route links the main attractions and features of this important heritage area.

From the South

At Auckland Airport head north along George Bolt Memorial Drive to

          Westney Road Methodist Church, 227 George Bolt Drive

turn left into Ihumatao Road to the

          Rennie/Jones Homestead, 210 Ihumatao Road

detour left to Renton Road to take in the

          Petrified Kauri forest

return to Ihumatao Road, continue west a short distance and turn right into Oruarangi Road to the

          Rennnie Farmhouse, 619 Oruarangi Road

continue along Oruarangi Road past the

          Paul Homestead, 556 Oruarangi Road

turn left into Ihumatao quarry Road to the

          Otuataua Stonefields Historic Reserve

return to Oruarangi Road into the Ihumatao Papakainga, location of

          Makaurau Marae

return to Oruarangi Road and continue north to

          Oruarangi Creek and Ihumatao Foreshore

continue along Oruarangi Road to the junction with Ascot Road and Montgomerie Road.  Turn south into Montgomerie Road to the

          Villa Maria Estate Winery and Vineyard Park

return to junction with Ascot Road and turn right into Ascot Road and then left into Greenwood Road.  At the junction with Island Road is the

          Māngere Wastewater Treatment Plant

turn left into Island Road to

          Puketutu Island - and explore the coastline of the Island (access is restricted to other areas of the Island)

return along Island Road to Greenwood Road and turn left following the road into Creamery Road.  On your left is

          Mangere Lagoon

continue along Creamery Road and at the roundabout turn left into Wallace Road.  Take the fourth turning left into Muir Avenue and then the third left into Ambury Road which leads to

          Ambury Regional Park

return along Ambury Road and turn left into Muir Road and then left into Andes Avenue leading to

          Kiwi Esplanade

continue along Kiwi Esplanade hugging the shoreline until reaching the junction with Coronation Road.  Turn right into Coronation Road.  You are now heading south and will pass  through

          Mangere Bridge Village

continue along Coronation Road and on your right you will come to

          Mangere Mountain & Mangere Mountain Education Centre

take the next right into Mountain Road.  On your left is

          Mountain View Primary School

continue along Mountain Road and at roundabout take the first exit left into Kirkbride Road.  Head back along Kirkbride Road to the junction with George Bolt Memorial Drive.  Turn right into George Bolt Memorial Drive and return to

          Auckland  Airport

From the North


Approach via the South Western Motorway and exit at Mahunga Drive.  Turn right into Rimu Road.  Turn right at the roundabout and then left to

          Kiwi Esplanade

continue along Kiwi Esplade hugging the shoreline until Andes Avenue.  Turn right into Muir Avenue and then right into Ambury Road leading to

          Ambury Regional Park

return along Ambury Road, ignoring the first turn into Muir Avenue.  At the crossroads and turn right into Muir Road and then right into Wallace Road.  Continue along Wallace Road.  On your right is

          Mangere Lagoon

at the roundabout turn right into Creamery Road and follow the road round into Greenwood Road.  At the junction with Island Road is the

          Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant

turn right into Island Road to
 
          Puketutu Island - explore the coastline of the Island (access is restricted to other areas of the Island)Return along Island Road and turn right and turn right into Greenwood Road.  At the 'T' junction turn right into Ascot Road and then third right into Montgomerie Road to the

          Villa Maria Estate Winery and Vineyard Park

return along Montgomerie Road and turn left into Oruarangi Road and continue south to

          Oruarangi Creek and Ihumatao Foreshore

continue along Oruarangi Road into the Ihumatao Papakainga, location of

          Makaurau Marae

turn right into Ihumatao Quarry Road to the

          Otuataua Stonefields Historic Reserve

return back along Ihumatao Quarry Road, turn right into Oruarangi Road and past the

          Paul Homestead, 556 Oruarangi Road

continue along Oruarangi Road to the

          Rennnie Farmhouse, 619 Oruarangi Road

turn right into Ihumatao Road and then detour right into Renton Road to the

          Petrified Kauri forest

return to Ihumatao Road, continue east to the

          Rennie/Jones Homestead, 210 Ihumatao Road

and then to the junction with George Bolt Drive.  On the corner is
 
          Westney Road Methodist Church (note: this building currently relocated because of Airport expansion)

turn right for Auckland Airport, or turn left to rejoin the Gateway Avenue Route continuing north on George Bolt Drive and then turning left at Kirkbride Road (signposted to Villa Maria), then right at the roundabout continuing along Kirkbride Road to the roundabout and taking a right turn into Mountain Road.  A little way along on your right is

          Mountain View Primary School

continue along Mountain Road and then turn left into Coronation Road and on your left you will come to

          Mangere Mountain & Mangere Mountain Education Centre

continuing down Coronation Road you will pass through

          Mangere Bridge Village

at the second roundabout turn right into Rimu Road and pick up the South Western Motorway
